Backgrounder: Susan Sommers, Motivational Speaker and Author
Susan was born and raised in New Jersey and earned a Masters Degree from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Science Degree from Syracuse University. After moving to Toronto, she received a Public Relations Certificate from the University of Toronto.
Prior to starting her career in journalism, speaking, and training, Susan was the Marketing Director for Olympia & York Developments Limited at First Canadian Place.
In 1982, Susan founded her own public relations and media relations agency, susan sommers + associates. Since then, she has developed marketing and publicity programs for public and private sector companies and organizations across Canada, including Queen's University, The Toronto Blue Jays, Designers Ontario, The Second Cup, Forever Plaid, Moneysworth & Best Shoe Repair, Imago Restaurants. Matinee Fashion Ready-to-Wear, Volunteer Centre of Toronto, and The Yoga Studio.
Since 1990, Susan has designed and delivered programs to audiences across Canada, including corporations, businesses, professional associations, not-for-profit organizations, and shopping centres. Susan currently designs and delivers her marketing training programs through the Schulich School of Business (York University), Sprott School of Business (Carlton University), the University of Toronto's School For Continuing Studies, and Canadian Fundraiser. She has also designed workshops for Halton Hills Parks & Recreation, City of Toronto, and Running Room.
As a journalist and author, Susan has written weekly columns for The Globe and Mail and The Toronto Star, as well as feature articles for a variety of consumer and trade publications. Her most recent book, Building Media Relationships, was published by Irwin Publishing in 2002. Her workbook for non-profits, called Media Wise, was published by United Way of York Region. For two years, Susan wrote monthly columns for PR Canada’s Internet newsletter. Her new DVD, Building Media Buzz, will be released in 2006.
In addition to her speaking career (and her running routine), Susan is married, mother of two daughters, grandmother of four, and actively involved in the North York YMCA's Breakfast of Champions.
