Antioxidant Nutrition: Antioxidant Foods, Supplements, and Vitamins

Antioxidants are frequently mentioned as one of the most helpful substances when it comes to improving one’s health, but what are they, what can they really do that makes them so popular as a health aid, and where can they be found?

Antioxidants are substances that counter the negative effects of the oxidation process and they can occur naturally in most of the ordinary foods that we eat everyday. If you have a perfectly balanced diet, you might already be getting adequate antioxidants from your food, but for most people, antioxidant supplements are needed to supply the body with the required amounts of this substance.

Foods That Are Rich in Antioxidants

  • The richest sources of antioxidants are several kinds of fruits, especially berries like strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, cherries and even plums. Apples are also rich in antioxidants but some varieties have more than others. The ones with the highest antioxidant content are the granny smith, the gala and most red varieties of the fruit.
  • Beans have also been found to contain high amounts of antioxidants, particularly the small red bean. Black beans and red kidney beans are also abundant sources of this substance.
  • When it comes to vegetables, artichoke tops the list of those rich in antioxidants. The taste may not be very pleasant for many people, but its health benefits are definitely worth it.

Getting your daily dose of antioxidants from natural foods is the best way, but for some people this is not always possible. Fortunately, there are also a lot of natural antioxidant supplements out there that can help give you your daily allowance. Most antioxidant supplements consist of a combination of vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc and carotene.

Of course, you can also find separate pills for each of the mentioned vitamins and minerals, but it will be much more convenient if you can find one supplement that contains all of the necessary antioxidants. Not only will these pills be easier to take, but the risk of having contradictory effects is completely eliminated.

As much as possible, try to get your daily dose of antioxidants from your regular diet. For example, instead of taking vitamin C supplements, you can have an orange for your mid-morning snack instead, or replace your carotene supplement with some carrot sticks.

What we have listed above are merely our top choices, and there are certainly hundreds of other antioxidant sources out there. If you want, you can have a lengthy discussion with your local nutritionist and she will be more than willing to give you a list of all the foods that are rich in this substance. You can also go to the pharmacy and ask for a list of antioxidant supplements that you can choose from.

Regardless of which method you choose, once you start increasing your antioxidant intake, you will notice a lot of positive changes in your overall health.
