Antioxidant Nutrition: Why are Antioxidants Important?

If you read health magazines and websites, you will come across the word antioxidants. They are in fact the new health trend that so many food manufacturers are capitalizing on. Despite all this hoopla, antioxidants have actually been around forever but it’s only recently that the public has been made aware of the benefits they have on our health.

How Antioxidants Can Improve Your Overall Health

  • The body constantly produces harmful free radicals as a by product of several natural processes. These free radicals can contaminate health body cells by making them unstable. The role of antioxidants in the body is to inhibit the free radicals from destroying otherwise healthy cells.
  • One of the most popular health benefits of antioxidants is their ability to delay the aging process. Many of the common signs of normal aging such as the appearance of wrinkles, the deterioration of the immune system, the onset of memory loss and so on, can be attributed to the effects of free radicals on our cells. When you have adequate amounts of antioxidants in your body, these free radicals won’t be able to do much damage and you can easily put the brakes on premature aging.
  • Another health risk frequently associated by free radicals is the growth of certain kinds of cancers. By increasing your antioxidant intake, you can reduce the risk of developing cancer of the breast, bladder, colon and prostate, but even they will not provide a cure to cancers that have already started to grow. However, there is a lot of research going on about the potential value of antioxidants as a cure for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, strokes and many other diseases related to the heart and the blood vessels.
  • When bad cholesterol builds up in your body, it tends to oxidize and cling to your blood vessels, significantly increasing the risk of a heart attack or a stroke. Antioxidants can reduce this risk by hindering the oxidation of bad cholesterol and instead helping to flush them out of your system.
  • Antioxidants are also very effective for improving the body’s immune system. When you get enough antioxidants into your body everyday, you will be much more resistant to illnesses and infections. In effect, this will not only make your body healthier, but it will make you look younger as well.

The well-publicized health benefits of antioxidants are really not just a marketing ploy food manufacturers have conjured out of the blue to sell their products. There really are a lot of health benefits that we can get from antioxidants. The best thing about this is that antioxidants can actually be found in a lot of the ordinary foods that we consume everyday. In addition, there are also dozens of dietary supplements in the market today and you can use them to further boost your daily supply of antioxidants.
