Brain Exercises: How To Increase Your Memory

Forgetfulness is one of the most common signs of aging. There is no way you can avoid it just as you can’t prevent the appearance of wrinkles on your skin. However, you can do some things to at least delay the process and keep you on the peak of mental health for a longer period.

Easy Ways of Improving Your Brain Power

  • The body needs constant physical activity to remain healthy. In the same way, you should also exercise your brain to keep it in top condition. Fun and easy ways to do this include crossword puzzles, word searches and sudoku. You can also learn to speak a new language or play a new instrument.
  • Physical fitness also contributes to your mental health. When you exercise regularly, the healthy flow of blood to your brain will keep it active and alert. No heavy workouts are required either. A simple morning walk around the neighborhood will more than suffice.
  • Stress makes people forgetful so you should avoid getting into stressful situations in the first place.
  • Getting adequate hours of sleep is another easy way of improving your brain power. By allowing your brain cells to rest and recharge, you will improve your memory retention as well.
  • Have a positive attitude towards life. Negativity only leads to mental stress, and this can cause the deterioration of your brain functions. Learn to let go of negative energy and focus on the good things in life.
  • Build your self-confidence. When people notice that they are becoming forgetful, they begin to doubt themselves and this only makes them forget even more things.

If you follow these guidelines, you will surely improve your memory in no time. However, these are not the only ways to do it. Here are more tips for having better memory:

  • Learn to focus. Most of the time, people forget things because they didn’t pay enough attention to it in the first place. Make a deliberate effort to remember important things and consciously register them into your brain. If you are introduced to someone new, you are more likely to remember her name if you actually repeat it out loud.
  • Sing the things you need to remember. People tend to remember words if they are associated with a tune. If nursery rhymes were merely recited and not sang, children won’t be able to remember them quite as fast. You don’t need to be a music composer to be able to do this. Just say what you need to remember with a simple melody and it will surely stick to your mind.
  • Use visualization techniques. This is actually quite a fun way of remembering things. If you were going to the grocery store for instance, create a mental image that includes all the items in your shopping list. You can visualize a person with egg eyes, spaghetti hair, a cereal box body and so on. There are no rules on how to do this but it’s best if you use mental pictures that are meaningful to you.
  • Use mnemonics like making a sentence with the first letters of words in a list. You might remember how elementary teachers told you to say “My Very Eager Mother Just Served Us Nine Potatoes” to remember the nine planets in order – Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. (Back then, Pluto was still a planet!)
  • If you have the literary talent, you can conjure an entire story to remember your lists as well.

There are dozens of ways to improve your memory. Find one that you like the most and keep doing it. Eventually, you will notice a significant improvement in your brain power.
