How Does Stress Affect Your Immune System?

Research has shown that stress can cause many different changes in a person’s physical, mental and emotional well-being. One of these changes is the weakening of the immune system. This is the reason why people are more susceptible to certain illnesses when placed under a lot of stress. Stress is not directly responsible for the illness but it does make your body a lot less resistant to various infections that cause you to be sick.

Stress can actually protect our bodies in some instances, but this protection is only meant for short-term situation. If you are frequently suffering from too much stress, your body will eventually deteriorate, beginning with the weakening of the immune system. If left untreated for a prolonged period, this can lead to even more serious health repercussions.

What Causes Stress?

Different situations cause different levels of stress. For instance, if you are running late on a project at work and your boss is constantly nagging you, that’s one kind of stress that you can probably live with as it will eventually dissipate. However, more severe situations can cause a lot more stress, like if you are diagnosed with a serious medical condition or if you suffer the loss of someone close to you. The stress that comes with these situations can have many long-term effects, including the deterioration of the immune system.

Studies have also shown that stress can affect older or sick individuals with much more impact than other people. When the sick or the elderly undergo extremely stressful situations, it may be very difficult for them to recover. For the more severe cases, there may even be a risk of dying due to the effects of stress.

Reducing Stress

There are many different ways to reduce stress but in order to find out which method will be most effective, you will first have to find out what it is that caused the stress in the first place. In many instances, this is not that easy because stress doesn’t always come immediately after the triggering event. For these cases, seeing a psychiatrist or your own physician may be the best option.

Immediate treatment is necessary to reduce stress in order to prevent it from causing more serious health conditions. There have been several cases in the past where people neglect to deal with their stress, only to end up suffering heart attacks or strokes because of it.

There are many treatment methods for reducing stress levels but the best thing you can do is to prevent it from even happening to you at all.

Effective Ways of Eliminating Stress

  • Meditate.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Release negative emotions.
  • Eat a healthy and balanced diet.

Being under stress can only make you depressed, physically weak, mentally sluggish and look older. To avoid these situations, make sure you do everything you can to conquer stress.
