People who are constantly depressed about certain situations in their life usually have problems going to sleep at night. Similarly, those who are frequently deprived of adequate sleep can eventually fall into a serious state of clinical depression.
What is the Relationship Between Insomnia and Depression?
Depressed people typically exhibit a lack of energy to do regular activities. They are mostly sedentary and spend a lot of time lying down in bed but without actually falling asleep. Instead, they toss and turn all night thinking about their problems.

Once sleep-deprived individuals start to show signs of depression, the problem will only get much worse. There are several stages of sleep that people go through and in order to be completely well rested, all of these stages should be experienced in the right order. Many people who suffer from depression are unable to do this because with their disrupted sleep patterns, the body tends to skip stages, making the individual feel tired even after spending more than 8 hours in bed.
Almost all people who suffer from depression also go through sleep disorders, but the type of insomnia they experience will differ depending on what type of depression that have fallen under.
Obviously, there is a very strong link between sleep deprivation and depression but until today, the real reason for this link has not yet been made clear. What we do know is that the best way to treat these conditions is to do so simultaneously, especially if it is unclear as to which one is the trigger for the other. Also, with early detection of insomnia, the treatment can be administered sooner and this can completely prevent the onset of depression.
Dealing with Insomnia
The occasional sleepless night is quite normal but if it happens frequently, you should definitely make an appointment with your doctor so you can be observed for the symptoms of insomnia.
Just as treating insomnia early can prevent depression, the early diagnosis and treatment of depression can also help you avoid having to go through the difficulties of sleep deprivation. Keep in mind that prevention is always the best treatment so don’t hesitate to tell your doctor anything unusual that you might have noticed. This way, you can get treated as early as possible and avoid all the health concerns that could possibly take place.
