Youth is usually equated with beauty, which is why millions of people are always on the quest for products that make them look younger. Manufacturers have capitalized on this trend, producing tons of anti-aging creams and lotions and other products that claim to help regain youth by delaying the aging process.

It can be shocking to realize just how many millions of dollars are spent every year on this quest for youth and beauty. People would spend their hard-earned wages on expensive skin care products they are not even sure would work for them. Ironically, the best way to look younger and be healthier is simply to sleep more, which obviously doesn’t cost a single cent.

Most of the time, people who are often tired, stressed and deprived of sleep are those who look gaunt and older than they really are. Furthermore, the lack of sleep also weakens their immune system, making them easy targets for infections and illnesses that can make them look much older as well.

If you are not getting adequate hours of sleep every night, you might say that you can handle it and that it doesn’t really affect your health. However, the truth is that constant sleep deprivation does prevent you from being as healthy as you can possibly be. Without proper rest, the cells in your body are not renewed as they should be, making you sluggish and visibly worn out. Regardless of how unaffected you claim to be, the physical effects of your lack of sleep will be harder to ignore as time goes by.

Irritability and depression are other negative effect of sleep deprivation. When your body is not well-rested, you won’t be able to feel good about yourself and this will be manifested in the kind of facial expressions that you show, and the lack of a healthy glow in your skin. On the contrary, sleeping well makes you look happier and younger.

Tips for Sleeping More Peacefully

  • Avoid drinking caffeinated beverages at least 5 hours before bedtime.
  • Turn off all bright lights in your bedroom.
  • Keep your evening meals small.
  • Do not watch TV before going to bed because this can further increase the energy levels in your brain.
  • Allow yourself to be completely relaxed as you go to bed.

When it comes to the required number of sleeping hours, 8 hours is the average, but the actual length of sleep needed actually depends on the individual. For some people, 6 or 7 hours may be more than enough while others may need up to 9 hours. In any case, you will know that you have had enough sleep when you wake up in the morning feeling completely rested and relaxed. However, if you still feel exhausted after sleeping for more than 8 hours, it may be a sign of a sleep disorder and you should consult with your physician right away.

So the next time you are enticed to buy one of those anti-aging creams and other products that claim to be the fountain of youth, think again. Why spend all that money when you can look younger and be healthier simply by improving your sleeping patterns?
