Is Organic Produce Really That Expensive? Maybe… or Maybe Not!
In recent years, there has been much talk about the health benefits of buying organically grown food products. It is said that these products are much better that the regular variety in terms of health benefits. Because of these advantages, people are willing to pay a higher cost, but are the extra dollars really worth it?
The fundamental concept behind organic products is to create an alternative food product that does not contain the potentially harmful artificial chemicals found in most regular food varieties. This includes synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and other growth hormones normally used in plants and animals. Many people choose organic over traditional products because of the health benefits while other do so because of ecological reasons.
Common Problems About Organic Food
Probably the most obvious issue about organic food is the higher cost. In the past few years, the demand for organic products has risen considerably and production has fallen behind. To meet the continually rising demand, many local producers have had to import materials from other location, and this expense contributes to the retail cost of the products.
Organically grown fruits and vegetables are also not completely free of chemicals. Traces of artificial substances are still found on many organic produce, particularly pineapples, sweet potatoes and bananas. The USDA also has no fixed requirements when it comes to organic seafood and cosmetics. Even if these products come with a USDA “guaranteed organic” sticker, that doesn’t guarantee anything at all.
Finding Cheap Organic Products
Most of the commercially produced organic products today have a much higher cost than their regular counterparts. In some parts of the country, an organic product may be sold for as much as twice the price of the traditional variety.
If you are not prepared to spend this much money, you can try going to your local farmers and buying directly from them. This is a great option especially if you live near the country. The produce is guaranteed to be much fresher, and the prices will be unbelievably low. In addition, you will also be doing your part in helping to boost your local economy.
However, if you live in an urban area, you may not have much of a choice but to buy the more expensive brands of organic products. As long as you are careful in reading the labels and checking on the manufacturer, you will also find a lot of good organic products in the city.
