At first thought, eating a raw food diet does not sound very appealing. This means passing on roast chicken and grilled fish and steak and everything else that has been cooked. However, when you consider the health benefits this diet can give you, you might want to give it a second thought.

According to advocates of the raw food diet, eating uncooked food is naturally the best choice for our body. This practice ensures that the food you eat will still contain all of its natural nutrients, unlike with cooked foods that have lost a large percentage of their nutrition during the cooking process.

There are many different kinds of raw food diets that you can choose from, including the following:

  • Raw Foodism

This is the all-encompassing raw food diet – whatever it is, as long as it is uncooked, it’s fair game.

  • Raw Vegan Diet

The only food items allowed in this diet are fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts and legumes – nothing more.

  • Primal Diet

In this diet, you can eat only dairy products, vegetable extracts and meats with fats.

These three diets are quite different from each other, but what they have in common is that at least three-fourths of the entire diet has to be completely raw.

What Are the Health Benefits of a Raw Food Diet?

When you go on the raw food diet, not only will you get much more nutrients from your food, but you will inevitably lose weight as well. Majority of the menu consists of fruits, vegetables and other plant foods, all of which contain almost practically no calories and very little fat. Also, the increased energy levels from uncooked foods allow your body to burn calories faster and much more easily.

People on the raw food diet are also much more physically and mentally active, possibly also because of this higher energy level that they get from raw foods. Uncooked foods do not contain refined sugars, and this reduced sugar intake may also contribute to the higher energy level in the body.

Enhanced digestion is another common observation among people who are on the raw food diet. Food is digested much more easily and completely because of the increased amount of enzymes ingested from raw foods. These enzymes are able to break down the food much more efficiently and without the need for too much stomach acid, which can sometimes cause digestion problems.

The digestive system is not the only system in the body that benefits from the raw food diet. The circulatory system also benefits from a diet of raw food because these foods do improve the blood circulation and the health of the heart. The reduced fat and cholesterol intake can also cause you to have clearer and healthier skin, as well as reduce the risk of many chronic illnesses.

Admittedly, the sound of a raw food diet is not very appealing but considering all these benefits to your health, it’s now easy to see why so many people make this kind of lifestyle choice for themselves.
