Insomnia Remedies: Daily Exercise!

Do you constantly find yourself tossing and turning late into the night unable to go to sleep? For most people suffering from insomnia, the typical solution to the problem is to pop a sleeping pill before going to bed. This may work but there are actually a few other healthier options to remedy the situation, such as exercising regularly.

The inability to get a good night’s sleep is usually due to an individual’s excessive stress hormone, or cortisol, levels, which can be caused by any of several factors such as a hectic work schedule, emotional trauma, or simply the lack of proper exercise. This is why sometimes you will find yourself unable to fall asleep even when your body is obviously exhausted.

When you exercise, your body’s cortisol levels will actually rise slightly but will soon diminish after some time. With this marked reduction in the production of stress hormones, your body will be able to relax more easily and going to sleep will no longer be a problem.

If you are suffering from insomnia due to stress, you will find it very difficult to rest because your hormones are keeping your mind active, thinking of all kinds of things instead of slowing down and relaxing at the end of the day.

How Can Exercise Improve Sleep Patterns?

When your body is subjected to intense physical exertion, it will become tired and inevitably feel the need to recharge itself. In effect, by exercising regularly, you are leaving your body no choice but to take a break and go to sleep.

In order to avoid having an overactive mind at bedtime, you can try thinking about whatever issues it is that you have while exercising so when it’s time to sleep, there will be nothing more to keep your mind occupied.

Another way to help you fall asleep more easily is to be completely relaxed as you climb into bed. Avoid any heavy physical activities at least four hours before bedtime. Use this period to wind down by taking a warm bath or reading a relaxing book. While exercising is good for getting rid of insomnia, you should certainly not do it right before you go to bed at night.

The best time for exercise is actually early in the morning but obviously, this is hard to work into the average person’s busy schedule. As an alternative, you can split your workout routines by just doing a short session in the morning and using as much of your spare time as possible to finish out the rest of your daily exercise requirements.

One of the best forms of exercise to help you get rid of chronic insomnia is yoga. This activity has been known to clear the mind and promote inner peace and relaxation. Try to enroll in a yoga class or at least buy a book and try to do it at home.

Aside from yoga, there are some other stretching exercises, such as Pilates, that can do you a lot of good especially for the purpose of improving your sleep patterns.

Because of the convenience, it can be tempting to just grab a couple of sleeping pills to help you get some rest. But keep in mind that exercising is infinitely better for you than simply taking some kind of medication.

When you use exercise to get rid of insomnia, not only will you be able to sleep peacefully at night, but you will have improved your overall health as well.
